JOAN MARGARET BUCKLEY

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joan Margaret Buckley. Born August 23, 1924 in England. She passed away at her home on March 30, 2011.

She leaves to mourn her son Arthur (Karen), daughter Trudy (Steve) Lynch, and son Jim (Traesi), Grandson Arnold (Erin) Buckley, Granddaughter Kari (Paul) Walsh, and Grandsons Colin and Andrew Buckley, Great Grandchildren Dilan and Jamie Buckley, and Jill, Amy and Emily Walsh. Her co-workers at The Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, especially Jean Rozzano, Dee Roberts and Nancy Wright. Her wonderful neighbours in Brinkworthy, especially Marjorie Lomas, Madeline Hardie, Cathy Stringer, and Lena Ostapowich. And last but not least, Joan leaves to mourn, her faithful cat “Winnie”.

Predeceased by her husband Charles in 2004 after 57 years of marriage, and their son Colin at the age of 18 in 1969.

Joan and Charlie immigrated to Canada in 1951 with their two young sons travelling by ship and train to Chemainus, B.C. They operated a Gas Station in Saltair on Vancouver Island from 1952 to 1960. In 1961 they moved to Salt Spring Island with their family of three. Their fourth child, Jim, was born on Salt Spring in 1965.

After Charles passed away in 2004 Joan eventually sold their Mount Maxwell home and moved to Brinkworthy, a move that she loved and never regretted. After being up “the Mountain” (as she referred to it) she started a new life in Brinkworthy and loved spending time with her family and her wonderful neighbours, baking, being so close to Ganges, and working in her garden. She had a green thumb and could grow anything.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Meadon Hall (basement of the Legion) on Saturday, April 23 from 1-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to The Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, where Joan volunteered every Wednesday for nearly forty years.

Special thanks to the SSI Firefighters, BC Ambulance, RCMP, Pat Beattie at Haywards Funeral Service, Trudy’s best friend Valerie Mintenko who was visiting us from Alberta at the time, and all our friends and co-workers who have been so supportive of our family.
