John (Jack) Mitchell

It is with great sadness the family of John (Jack) Douglas Mitchell born Sept. 13, 1918 announce his passing on October 9, 2011 peacefully in his sleep at the age of 93, in Burnaby B.C.. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years Mildred Anne, his eldest son Michael, brothers Clayton, Gordon and sister Jean. He will be missed by his daughter Judy Erickson and son Stephen Mitchell, daughters-in-law Susan and Yvonne and his 4 grandchildren Daniel (Rebecca) Scott (Jenelle), Kevin, Ally, great-grandson Wyatt, sister-in-law Marion and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was raised in Moose Jaw, Sask. He finished his education at Queens University where he graduated as a Mining Engineer, Sciences 1941. A highlight of Queens was meeting the love of his life Mildred (Mid) Dougherty and they were married in April 1943. It was also a significant time where he made lifelong friends, fond memories and kept them through the alumni class reunions. He served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII with the rank of Sub-Lieutenant (E) 1941-1945. For the majority of his career he worked as an executive for Dominion Engineering Works Ltd. in Montreal.

Jack enjoyed skiing and friends at the Lakeshore Ski Club in Montreal, golfing at Kanawaki, traveling, martinis and good jazz music. Mildred and Jack retired to Salt Spring Island in 1980 where they enjoyed golf at the Salt Spring Golf Club, making new friends and island life. He lived life to the fullest, maintained his sharp mind and his daily passion for the Globe and Mail. Many thanks to the kind and caring staff at the George Derby Veterans Centre in Burnaby where Jack resided for the past 4 years.

In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the Queens Annual Fund.
