Ted HINDS

Ted Hinds

July 8th 1936 – September 22nd 2016

Ted died peacefully in the company of his wife Eve, and son Adam in Royal Jubilee Hospital after suffering a catastrophic aortal dissection.

Born in Oshawa Ontario, Ted obtained a Marketing Degree at Ryerson University Toronto and became a valued marketing executive with the Bay for 12 years, and Sears for 22 years. Retiring early, he obtained a brokers licence and worked with Sutton Group. Retiring to Salt Spring, in 1997, he and Eve built a B&B wing on their farm and also grew organic herbs. Then Ted and Eve were recruited back to project manage the old Eaton Stores in Vancouver and Victoria to be renovated to Sears.

Eager to be a member of the community, Ted drove bus for Camp Narnia and was an active front line volunteer at the Islands Food Bank for many years. He could never sit idly by and ignore social unfairness or political incompetence so in 2005 he ran for election as Fire Trustee, eventually becoming Chairman.

After moving to Brinkworthy he became head of the Park Committee and also served as an active participant and supporter of Salt Spring’s Restorative Justice Programme. A keen fan of our Fall Fair, he and Eve were selling tickets again at the main gates as recently as last Saturday and Sunday.

Ted was a respected father figure and a man of integrity and generosity. Blessed with good judgement and a wicked sense of humour he loved to share good scotch with his close Salt Spring family.

He instinctively cared for the well being of others as was apparent until his last moments.

A quiet celebration of his life will be held after some time passes as per his wishes, when our hearts are starting to recover from the shock of his passing.

Our family wishes to pay tribute to the wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff both at Lady Minto and the Royal Jubilee for the high quality and immediacy of the support they gave to Ted during his medical emergency. Donations on Ted’s behalf, to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation.
