PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Santa is flanked by Salt Spring Lions Club helpers Debbie Cade, left, and Sandy Harkema at Mouat’s Mall as they prepare to meet island children after Santa’s arrival via water on Saturday, Dec. 13. Salt Spring and Mayne Island Lions Clubs have teamed up to revive the Santa Ship tradition that originated in the 1950s when the Gulf Islands were included in a Bellingham Jaycees Christmas Ship program serving Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands. Lions Clubs on both sides of the border took over in 1996, running the ship every year until the Covid pandemic in 2020, with the Canadian-only version launched by local Lions in 2024.
