Ida Maxine McManus

Ida Maxine McManus

(nee Hetherington)

November 19, 1927 –

December 1, 2012

Our loving mother passed away peacefully on December 1, 2012 at the age of 85. She will be deeply missed but her warmth and love will continue to be with the many special people who were so dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her husband Alexander McManus and granddaughter Nichola Rose Howard. Survived by her children Heather Howard (Dennis), Sharon Hall (Bob), Debbie Holmberg (Ray), Alex McManus, her beloved grandsons Morgan, Nicolas, Joshua, Jarred and many nieces and nephews. Ida was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Upon moving to Saltspring Island to begin her nursing career she met her future husband and Saltspring Island remained her home until her move to Nanaimo in 2011. Mom was an active member of the Saltspring community for over 50 years. Her love of music and sewing served her well in her duties as choirmaster with St. Mary’s church in her younger years. As a dedicated president of the Parent Teacher Association, she was instrumental in implementing innovative programs for the times, in health and education, such as hearing tests, vaccinations, and public speaking. As a hospital board member, she served on the building committee task force for the new Lady Minto Hospital and later Greenwoods. After losing her husband in 1977, Ida continued to be a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as head of BC and Yukon from 1981 to 1982 and later a member of numerous international committees supporting cancer and other charities. A memorial service will be held on January 12, 2013 at 1:00 PM at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 100 Chapel Street, Nanaimo, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church Guild Saltspring Island.
