Moving in the Spirit workshop offered
Star of the Sea Centre for Spiritual Living and Practice continues its fall series with a workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 25 titled Moving in the Spirit.
The time will be spent exploring inner stillness and the resulting movement that originates from that inner source of being. Using meditation, visualization, simple improvisational dance techniques, creative play and music, participants will learn ways to access the spiritual and holy nature of their bodies, provide opportunity to create and express prayer through movement, and feel the freedom and joy of dance. No dance experience is required, but a willingness to explore and play with movement and poetry is essential.
Leading the workshop will be Gale Hingston and Lottie Devindisch, who have been members of the dance community on Salt Spring Island for over 30 years as performers and teachers. Together they initiated the use of dance as part of the liturgy in Anglican worship services on Salt Spring Island.
Hingston studied contemporary dance at SFU and participated in contemporary and improvisational community classes in Nelson and on Salt Spring. She enjoys Scottish Country dance, folk and sacred circle dance.
Devindisch was classically trained at the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, England, and subsequently taught and performed internationally in a variety of dance genres. Her focus now is on improvisational forms.
The event will be held in All Saints By-the-Sea on Park Drive in Ganges from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Please bring a snack, bottled water, yoga mat or blanket, and wear loose comfortable clothing. Bare feet, socks or soft-soled shoes are recommended. No dance experience is necessary, but a willingness to explore and play with movement is essential.
Registration is required at email@example.com.
