Nail-biting tourney ends with SIMS win

Salt Spring Middle School boys won the day after their first time hosting the mid-Island basketball championships last Friday in “a nail-biting conclusion for the coach and fans.”

“It was a great tournament,” SIMS coach Jude Shugar said, noting a Grade 6/7 team from Salt Spring stepped up to take on Grade 8 challengers after one of the six participating schools pulled out, playing well for their first time in a tournament setting.

SIMS’ Grade 8 team won all of its games and made it to the final against Prevost Middle School, who was also undefeated up to that point. The score see-sawed back and forth until SIMS was down eight points in the second quarter, but the local boys rallied to bring the score back to a tie by the half.

With play intensifying through the second half, SIMS called a timeout with just 3.5 minutes left on the clock. Coming back in they rallied again to bring the score to 45-43.

“Josh Brown had a huge block in the last four seconds of the game to hold the win for us,” Shugar said.
