Islanders are invited to head down to Shipstones on Friday night for an all-ages public showing of the TV show Breaking New Beats, and live music from one of the stars and his colleagues.

Gulf Islands Secondary School student Wesley Hardisty is featured in the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network show as one of the top 10 up-and-coming aboriginal performers in North America. The segment was taped in November 2010 and aired in December of 2011.

At the free public showing, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be live music by Hardisty and friends, including Ramesh Meyers, Callum Grant-Cawdell and Phoenix Lazare.

Hosted by Bronson Pelletier, the star of Twilight Saga’s Wolf Pack, along with Crystle Lightning, the TV show features the artists in a live performance at Winnipeg’s historical Burton Cummings theatre.

Ten acts took the spotlight and shared their stories in a new way, with a new sound, in genres that include traditional, indie rock, hip hop, new age electronic, fiddle and folk acoustic.

Hardisty hails from the North West Territories but has lived on Salt Spring for the last few years.
